                                                       Who We Are

We are James and Kelly Stone, happily married business owners. We combined our names and talents and founded “Jellystone Photography.”  James has always had an interest in geology (with volcanism being on the top of his list) and has done a self study course on the subject for years.. We both share an interest in photography, but in all honesty, James has the more precise eye and has caught the majority of the shots we sell. Kelly contributes her business knowledge to the running of the business. Our travels have thus far taken us to the western coast of the U.S. (“the ring of fire“), which include Mammoth Mountain, Long  Valley, Lassen Volcanic National Park and Central Oregon. Our recent expedition was to Yellowstone National Park, where we captured an abundance of beautiful photographs. We would like to thank you for taking the time to read about us, and hope you find your experience, browsing our products, brings you the picture perfect photo for your enjoyment.

                                                      Our Passion

As most of us are aware, we all live on a very dynamic planet. Our planet is always changing, sometimes very slowly, sometimes rapidly, right beneath our feet. Geology is the study of the Earth and of the forces that change it. By studying sedimentary layers, the Earth tells us its story of times long past.

Plate tectonics is responsible for most of the changes that occur on our planet. The crust of the Earth moves over the semi-liquid mantle below it. Some places are constructive plate boundaries (the plates spreading apart) and others are destructive plate boundaries (the plates subducting or colliding).

Faults are places where parts of the crust slip, grind and thrust together. These events also produce earthquakes. When faults thrust over each other they deform the land and produce hills and mountains. Weather comes in and shapes the land, even further, through erosion. Water cuts through mountains, forms canyons, exposes rock and moves the land to the sea. Beautiful alpine vistas are left for us to enjoy.

Volcanoes are another rapid change that deforms the land. Volcanoes have violent and destructive beginnings and are very dangerous to surrounding life. Lava flows burn forests, kill wildlife and change the land forever.  When the eruptions are over, however, the forests return, wildlife reinhabits and the land becomes fertile like never before. New and unique geologic features, left after the eruptions, lend a beauty to the land that is difficult to describe with words. Geysers spewing boiling water, terraces from deposited minerals, bubbling mud pots and colorful algae encrusted hot springs are just a few features from places such as Yellowstone Park. Crystal clear springs and lakes, cinder cones and ryolitic lava flows (obsidian volcanic glass)  form in places such as the Cascade mountain range of Central Oregon.

These landscapes and their natural beauty, the diverse wildlife that inhabits these areas and the unique features they contain are potentially in jeopardy. With an ever increasing human population and the pollution our species creates, changing weather patterns and the threat of global warming  our world is changing drastically. We are listing more endangered species every year. Urban sprawl is causing deforestation. The day will also arrive when human encroachment will overtake our most beautiful places and even the volcanoes, with their inherent dangers, will not remain undeveloped and picturesque.

We of JellyStone Photography feel it is important to capture and preserve images of these beautiful areas of our world. We include archival mounting with our printed images for their longevity. We embrace the opportunity to preserve images of natural beauty for today and for our future genertations.

                                                      Our Abilities

All our life we have been avid "point and shoot" photographers as hobbyists. For quite some time, we have turned hobby into professionalism. We have taken photography and photography related courses at college. We have spent countless hours on self study of nature and photography.

Our equipment used for our shoots is top of the line. James uses a Nikon D200 body camera with several styles of lenses to choose from according to the subject. He uses a Sigma 10-20mm, Sigma 28-90mm or Sigma 50-500mm lens. Kelly uses her Olympus Evolt 500 camera accompanied with either her 14-45mm or 40-150mm lens. We try to refrain from using any filters as to capture the natural beauty of the scene.

We, here at JellyStone, feel the print quality is just as important as the image, so we use the best quality photo paper (guaranteed to make image last 100 years or more), and top of the line printers. We use Epson R2400 and HP Photosmart Pro B9180 printers. Both printers use a giclee printing process which is a very accurate computerized reproduction in which the image and topology are generated from a digital file and printed by special ink jet, using ink. Each printer uses 9 different ink cartridges. After the image dries, we choose two shades of matt that compliment the hues of the photo and custom cut them to size. We then finalize the product by encasing it in a beautiful wood frame. We chose wood as it captures the essence of nature.

James and Kelly are proud of their work and are confident you, the consumer, will be pleased with your purchased photograph.
